The children from Motse Wa Tsholofelo (the daycare I came to volunteer at) are out on vacation. They were dismissed a week early due to an outbreak of diarrhea that had killed 18 children last time I saw the statistic (2 and a half weeks ago). To utilize the supplies my mother donated, I was put in contact with Adam & Eve (A&E) daycare.
A&E is
having a special summer program to give the kids somewhere to go and to learn
something new - crafting. George, the organizer who I think the world of, has
basically put me in charge of the summer program. I met the teachers 2 Fridays
ago and they were on board immediately. “This is great for the kids, but it’s
even better for us!” To give them a taste of the program we would start the
following Monday, we made origami animals. One cannot help but marvel at
globalization when you see an American teaching a Japanese art in Botswana to teachers and children from Botswana, Zimbabwe,
and Uganda.
The first day with the children we made the origami animals. The kids loved it. I had prepped the teachers on Friday, so I tried to let them lead the session. We could only do a few of the animals before it was clear that the children's ability to concentrate was coming to an end. We gave them a play break then let them do a drawing project with crayons. The kids made pictures where they colored inside the squares. The second picture they had to color outside of the squares in a single color. It was interesting to see how much trouble some of the students had tracing the squares.
